Let me get a little bit meta on you for a moment with a little fact about an artist who goes by the name KAWS. He is a collector of art, other people’s creations, but not other people’s art. He collects knockoffs of his own designs. He has shelves of toys and clothing with designs that are derivatives and/or attempts at creating his brand again to make a little bit of chump change. The same thing happens here in the tech world every single day of the year. Today it’s going on with the Galaxy Tab.
Japanese mobile carrier NTT Docomo recently won the marketing rights for the Galaxy Tab. Not a week later, their number one opponent KDDI has a very similar device going by the name SMT-i900. This device obviously looks very similar to the Tab, but with the following list of abilities and measurements: 7-inch LCD touchscreen with 1,024×600 resolution, Bluetooth, 512MB RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, and it’ll be running on Android 2.2 Froyo.
So far so similar, yes? After that list, the downfalls kinda pile up. This SMT-i900 has a 2MP CMOS camera on the back instead of the Tab’s 3MP, no camera on the front, and it has 4GB of memory as opposed to the Tab’s 16 or 32. Finally, instead of the TouchWiz UI the Tab has, the SMT-i900 is equipped with the Ocean Observation UI. SMT-i900 will be available February 2011.
