If you kind of forgot that you actually downloaded Moments photo app, this news shouldn’t really affect you unless you actually used the app after installing it. Realizing that not a lot of people have been using it, Facebook has announced that they are shutting down the photo sharing app as they failed to be the next Google Photos. Support for the app will end by February 25 so it’s time to retrieve those photos that you’ve uploaded and shared through the app.
Moments, introduced back in 2015, was Facebook’s attempt at letting you share photos with loved ones without having to upload them on the more public social network. The idea was similar to the more successful Google Photos. But even though the app has been installed by 87 million users, it looks like not all of them were actually using it. Downloads also started dwindling and according to Sensor Tower, it was down to 150,000 last month.
Facebook started informing users through email and also through notifications on the app itself. Active users will need to go to this link to be able to sort through the photos and videos and choose which you want to export to your phone or your computer. There’s also an option to upload your Moments photos to an album on Facebook, but don’t worry the default is the only you can see the album. Then you can choose to make it public or seen by your friends only.
Facebook did not give an exact number of active users but the fact that they indicated the lack of users as a reason for the shutdown is very telling. They’re used to launching and then discontinuing support for stand-alone apps like with Paper, Poke, Rooms, and countless other apps. But rarely do they admit that it’s because of a lack of users.
