The Apple vs FBI issue may have died down a bit, but user privacy is still a big issue now in the tech world, particularly how to balance it with the seemingly contradictory demand for more intelligent understanding of consumers. If rumors are to be believed, Facebook will offer its users the choice between having a completely encrypted Messenger app versus giving them permission to study their data more to bring better AI features in the future.

Sources are saying that Facebook is currently in the process of creating an option for an encrypted Messenger, should users want to completely protect their private communications. Facebook itself, the government, or any other private company/individual will not be able to read any of your messages due to the supposed end-to-end encryption. This is an important feature for some users now, and a lot of messaging apps like WhatsApp and even Google (with its semi-controversial new Allo Messenger) are offering this kind of privacy, although the latter is also going opt-in.

The dilemma with encrypted services is that it may defeat the business end for the companies. And some users are also expecting features and services that use AI, but with private conversations, the developers will not be able to get enough information from the users’ personal data to create a service that will please the consumers. That is why Facebook wants to make the encrypted Messenger opt-in, so they can continue bringing Smart features like bots, to those who want to have these rather than block access to their personal data.

But of course, this is all just rumors and Facebook has said that they will not comment on rumor or speculation at this point. Although you can already start thinking now which you will choose if the time comes: end-to-end encryption or smarter AI services?
