We were wondering when a developer would actually pick up on the boom of the popularity of UFC and mixed martial arts in general. That question is answered today, as EA Sports launches the “EA SPORTS UFC” game on Android (and iOS). The game has been a relative success during its soft-launch period, so let’s see if that would translate to the global market.

One thing you can say about this sports game – it’s visually engaging. We’re sure you’ve had your fill of games that give great screenshots but doesn’t actually deliver in-game. We’re happy to say that is not the case here. EA Sports is bringing its sports game expertise and delivers with this newly-released UFC game. The screenshots you will see reflect the impressive visuals in-game.

The gameplay and controls will be an acquired taste. Casual gamers who grew up on mobile will anticipate and appreciate the tap and swipe combinations that you can do on the touchscreen. Special moves can be performed with quick taps, and some require skill to pull off as well – tapping at the right moment on a progress bar, or tapping quickly to fill a gauge. Most console gamers will actually long for a controller with this.

The downside, and it’s a pretty big one, are the IAPs. Mobile gamers learn to expect these now, but in this game, you are asked to can spend up to 3,500 gold (in game currency) on a single fighter, which will cost you around USD$30.00 all told. That will be a big turn off for people. You can actually earn gold by grinding to get to an amount, but the IAPs are just overpriced. Pick up the game at the download link below the video.
