For most people, dual booting a smartphone may not even be in their realm of possible things to do on an Android device. Unless you are one of those few people whose device is supported by the MultiROM project, which is basically one big hack to be able to get your phone to boot to a custom ROM of choice. Some developers have been peeking around Android Nougat and how it makes storage partitions, and they say dual boot may actually be possible.
Ethan Yonker, more popularly known as “Dees_Troy” of the Team Win Recovery Project, went looking into the Nougat source code and saw that Google has made some changes to the partition layout of upcoming Pixel devices that – with enough hard work by aftermarket developers – dual-boot may actually be possible.
With two copies of every partition, Dees_Troy says that developers may be able to hijack the second set of partitions to make dual-boot happen. This means that you might be able to boot stock Nougat on a Pixel device, and also have a choice of booting to a custom ROM if you need some features not available on stock Nougat.
As bonus, the developer also says that “seamless updates”, a feature highlighted by Google on Nougat which will unfortunately be available only to devices that come with Nougat out of the box, might also actually work with this partition hi-jack they might be able to do. So keep those fingers crossed on this particular issue as it develops.
