The good news just keeps on coming today (if you call blur-less photos of an upcoming Android handset good news, that is). This time around, it looks like the folks over at Boy Genius Report have been talking to one of their sneaky ninja, embedded deep somewhere in a Verizon stronghold, and have learned when the Droid X (formerly known as the Droid Shadow, or Droid Xtreme), and the Droid 2 will actually launch.
It should come as no surprise that one of these devices is launching in July. What’s odd, though, is that the Droid X seems to be the lucky one out of the gate, bringing with it that 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, “Ninja Blur,” and the 1GHz processor (reportedly). Also, it will launch with Android 2.1, which we’ve already surmised from the innumerable leaks.
As for the Droid 2? That’s apparently not coming until August. (This contradicts with that WSJ story we ran several days ago, which said two Motorola devices would be launching in July.) And, even more interesting, is that it’s apparently launching with Android 2.2. The Droid 2 supposedly doesn’t have the customized UI that the X is getting, so that makes us think that the Droid 2 will be a “vanilla” Android device, when it hits. Which would make sense for the whole Android 2.2 thing, but it also makes the Droid X just one step “less than” the Droid 2, and it’s only going to launch a month before. What do you think? Will the Droid X’s stand-out hardware, compared to the Droid 2’s suggested 3.7-inch screen, 750MHz processor, and “updated” keyboard make people ignore that it probably won’t be updated to Android 2.2 any time soon after its launch? (Of course, that’s pure speculation, simply based on past events; Motorola could be planning to update the OS as soon as the Droid 2 hits.)
