Top Gear may be over and the guys from the show may have a new series over on Amazon called The Grand Tour, but that doesn’t mean Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May (with executive producer Andy Wilman) are resting on their automobile laurels. They have launched a new app called Drive Tribe, which they call a “digital hub for motoring” and it will be a virtual digital paradise for anyone who loves cars and automobiles and all the things that go with it.
The three are just the brains behind this operation, but it involves “thousands of the motoring world’s best-loved writers, racers, photographers, and filmmakers.” There are over 7,000 Tribes (basically, communities) available on launch, and you can search and browse and see which ones you’d want to join. You’ll have your own personal feed based on the content of the various Tribes you joined. You can browse through videos, images, long-form articles, photo galleries, etc. You can also interact with the comments, reposts, and “bumps” (probably, likes).
The three main men will host their own tribes, like Clarkson will have his “Alfa Male” tribe while May has his “James May’s Carbolics”. There is no monetization of content for now, but eventually, they will be “leveraging native advertising and branded content” of course. They are expecting that the “tribal element” and the fact that motoring online is still a very much untapped market to ensure the success of this niche project.
You can download Drive Tribe from the Google Play Store for free. Go crazy exploring all the various tribes that you can think of, from “drift culture in Tokyo, Women’s Motorcross, to speed racing in Africa.”
