There are news items that can change the course of your life or change the way you think about certain things. And then there are those that will absolutely have no impact on your life but it’s still fun to know. Obviously, this one is the latter. If you’re a fan of The IT Crowd, that British sitcom turned cult favorite that last aired 6 years ago, then this news would be of particular interest to you. That is, if you have a device running on Android Marshmallow and if you remember the episode “Calamity Jen”.
For emergency numbers, most countries use three digit numbers like 911 or 999 that are easy to remember so you won’t easily panic if you need police or medical assistance. In one episode of The It Crowd, they had an ad showing the new emergency service number 0118 999 881 999 119 725…3, which of course was just a joke but became a popular gag amongst the IT Crowd fanbase.
So what happened is that apparently, there are some fans within Google (not surprising of course) who decided to put a little easter egg (no, not that kind of recently celebrated egg) in the stock dialer of the Android Marshmallow. When you dial the numbers we mentioned above, the dial will flash blue and red, just like emergency colors.
But don’t worry, it won’t actually connect to any number. It’s just something…cute. We did say it is not a life-changing discovery, but hey, IT Crowd fans would probably have a little laugh at this “inside joke”. So just use your default dialer on stock Marshmallow to see it in action. Or just see the GIF above.
