If Google won’t get to it faster, a developer might beat them to having Android Wear smartwatches working with iPhones. While of course this is not an official port, if you’re that eager to connect your iPhone with your smartwatch that is not an Apple Watch or a Pebble, then this may be the only way to do so. Android developer MohammadAG shared in a Reddit discussion that he is this close to having his app approved in the App Store.
He explained that he has actually been trying to get the app approved but for various reasons, he hasn’t been approved. But this time, he used a feature called Apple Notification Center Service (ANSC) that is also being used by Pebble that is why it is able to receive notifications from both iOS and Android Wear devices. He created an .apk that will run on the smartwatch and he will put it up on his website soon. He is also considering creating an open source for the app so other developers will be able to add something to this. But for now, the app is only limited to notifications, which may be an extremely limited view of the Android Wear experience.
Google has been reported as “close to finishing the final technical details” on their iOS support for Android Wear devices. However, the Android Wear support for iOS that was promised to be finished by the time the I/O developer conference started in May but it did not materialize.
Let’s see if this time around, MohammadAG will finally be able to publish his app on the App Store. But if not, we’ll always have an .apk.
