You don’t listen to our complaints and requests to take down that feature? Fine, we’ll do it our own way. At least, that’s what we think what the cops are saying to Google and Waze since they were basically ignored. We reported a few weeks ago about the issues cops are having with the police feature in the navigation app, and this time, they are taking matters into their own hands, so to speak.

Several prominent police officials requested that Google take down that feature in Waze where users can share cop sightings in the areas, saying that this can actually be used by some people for nefarious and dangerous purposes. Even though most people use them to actually avoid cops, they believe that it poses a danger to some cops’ well-being, especially given tense relations lately between the public and law enforcement in some states.

NBC Miami has reported that some cops in the region have taken to the digital streets by downloading Waze and then flooding it with fake reports of police sightings. This is both in unofficial protest against Google and also to confuse users and throw off the scent on actual sightings. There is nothing in the user agreement that requires people (or agencies) to make legit reports, which is also one of the drawbacks of a crowd-sourced navigation app like Waze.

There is no official statement yet from any law enforcement agency if this is an actual campaign. There is also no word from Google regarding the latest development in their “tiff” with the cops. Let’s wait for the next chapter in this ongoing digital argument.

  1. Easy fix, as people go by the location indicated give them the ability to show “not there” and remove that sighting? It may be an option already?

    • It is. Not sure if it has to be reported multiple times but you have the option when prompted to confirm if the sighting is legit/current.

  2. well if some cop wasnt killing innocent ppl for no reason, they will have nothing to fear. what are they worried about being put on front street. lol all these cops surveillance systems put them at a advantage. now that the public get a small piece of surveillance they are scared. smh cop take this L becuz u have guns at all times.

    • Edward you are a moron. How many cops are their in the US? Over 900,000 . How many of them have killed “innocent” people? Since 2005, 61 have been charged with murder or manslaughter. How many ambushed on cops since 2005? Roughly 1200. How many cops have died from being ambushed since 2005? 120 Officer have died in the line of duty by a coward who ambushed them. Just a month ago I watched a wife bury her husband who was ambushed here in San Jose. Everyday I say goodbye to my love one who is a cop and pray to go they come home safe because their are so many ignorant assholes out there trying to do senseless killings. Removing the cop feature from Waze is just one more way for them to be a little safer in this twisted country. Not all cops are bad in fact my spouse is a good one.

      • First off I’m not a moron. Some cops do a lot of killing based on so called fear factor. U can throw all kinda is stats out there from years back to try an justify ur comment. Let just be honest with ourselves a little bit here. A lot of police officers beat, kill, and destroy families too. Fact remains a lot of police will do what they want when they want. Give out pointless citations and down right falsely accuse stand up citizens of violating law when they are not. Over the years a lot of police officers have participated in breaking the law and not being held accountable for their actions. So excuse me if I’m not moved by ur statistics. I say, Not all police is bad. Explain this to me though. How come when a police officer see their partner doing something wrong, they stand by and watch or participate instead of correcting their mistake. I just see what u don’t see or refuse to see. I live in a area where police give tickets and falsely accuse and arrest citizen that isn’t causing harm or disturbing anyone.
