CopperheadOS, an outfit that makes an aftermarket Android ROM that they claim is more secure than the stock Android, is selling a Nexus 6P that is tweaked and already has CopperheadOS loaded onto it. While this apparently makes the device more secure, it also adds around USD$350 to the price of a normal Nexus 6P.
Security and threat from hacking and malicious attacks have been very real issues for Android these days. This is why CopperheadOS can actually be given the time of day to present its argument – a third-party Android ROM based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that should be at Marshmallow and gives you a lot more security than what normal Android would give.
These security features include protection from zero-day attacks, firewall and network protection (which includes MAC address randomization), no Google apps (CopperheadOS uses alternatives to G-apps and services), and stronger sandboxing of apps that you think may be infected. If you need a secure phone, this Nexus 6P with CopperheadOS actually is a good argument… until you see the pricing.
A regular 64GB Nexus 6P can be had these days for as low as USD$410. CopperheadOS is selling their tweaked device for USD$750. The funny is this – you can actually buy yourself a new Nexus 6P at a cheaper price, unlock the bootloader and flash CopperheadOS onto your phone, because AOSP mechanics dictate that they should make their ROMs available for free download, and they are. Go figure.
