The latest retro game title has arrived for Android users. The game is Contra: Evolution and it comes by way of Konami. This is the Android availability for a game that was originally released back in the late-80’s. The Play Store description refers to Contra as “bringing all the run-and-gun action of the 1988 original with 21st century graphics and controls.”
That being said, Contra: Evolution is priced at $0.99 and also comes with in-app purchases for extras. The game requires Android 2.1 or later for use, but is not available for tablets at the moment. We have yet to see anything from the developer that suggests tablet support is coming, however we do know the iOS version supports both the iPhone and iPad.
“Bill “Mad Dog” Rizer and Lance “Scorpion” Bean are back to business fighting aliens in the jungles of South America–but can you survive one of the hardest games ever?”
The Contra: Evolution game play will have you collecting power-ups and unlocking new levels and new characters as you advance. Otherwise, while this one is also being referred to as an “arcade blast from the past” the developer does make it clear that this release brings “updated HD graphics.” Basically, you get the story line from the original with a modern makeover in terms of graphics.
At present the game is sitting with a 3.2 overall ranking (based on 29 reviews). As usual the comments are a mixed bag. There are some offering praise such as how this is an excellent addition to the original and how it is super cool. On the flip side, there are also plenty complaining about the lack of tablet support.
The other issue deals with permissions — which is also a frequent complaint. With that, aside from being able to get a retro-gaming fix, the control setup is what Android game players will likely be familiar with. Basically that is to say Contra: Evolution has a virtual joystick on the left side with the virtual buttons on the right side.
