Tower defense games as a genre has but all been played out on the mobile platform. Blame it on the perfect union of a touch screen device and a game well-suited and paced for said platform. So believe us when we say we might have seen TD games in all of its possible incarnations – save possibly this new one. “Clandestine: Anomaly” attempts to mix augmented reality (AR) gameplay with standard tower defense mechanics.

Yes, you read that correctly. Game developer ZenFri has put out a tower defense game that requires your camera and GPS as well, because it utilizes your environment as the game map for the TD game. Clandestine: Anomaly assumes that aliens are attacking your neighborhood, and it’s up to you to put up the defenses within a mile radius of your home and repel the invaders. See the trailer video below.

It will take you some time – and at the very least a capable Android device – to learn the gameplay. But we guess that there will be a good bit of fun and payoff here if you put in the effort. The augmented reality visuals are competent and engaging, and it will be fun to defend against aliens with your familiar neighborhood environment as the backdrop. Learn a bit from the developer gameplay walkthrough video below.

Clandestine: Anomaly is already available via the Google Play Store – you can pick it up at the link below. The first few battles are free of charge, but you will need to pay for the next ones, if you do enjoy it.
