We haven’t heard much about the Android Device Manager since April last year when Google Search on desktop was finally allowed to help locate missing device. The app has been useful with its numerous features that’s why updates are always welcome. This one together with the fact that a Chromebook can now run Android apps via the Play Store make it possible for an owner to locate a device when missing. It’s something you don’t want to use ever but will forever be grateful for if you did.

The Google Play Services was recently updated so the Play Store would work on Chrome OS. Because of this, most apps are able to run on any Chromebook supported. This also means one thing: the Android Device Manager can run, allowING anyone to ring his or her missing Chromebook.

The idea is nothing new because we’ve been using it on smartphones. Android apps running on Chromebooks may be limited but the Chrome OS 52 made it possible at least on some models like the 2015 Chromebook Pixel, Acer R11, and Asus Flip that run the beta channel. Okay, there’s still a limit but we’re getting there.

This update isn’t for commercial release yet but we’re not surprised that it has arrived. It’s only a matter of time before we can “ring” any gadget easily. For now, this experience is limited to the Android-powered phones and notebooks. The results are accurate and you can easily wipe the content. However, ringing the gadget won’t really make a noise so you can’t annoy whoever stole it. You’ll just know where it is located.

This locating-ringing-wiping feature is something all gadgets and devices must have. It’s very useful and may probably discourage thieves. It may be a challenge to locate some units but at least you’ll have peace of mind that it’s somewhere out there.
