If you’re using Chrome for Android (of course you are!), whether it’s version 49 or the Chrome 50 beta, you’ll be getting small but significant updates for your browsers. Chrome 49 will now revert back to the previous style of tab switching (before Lollipop came along) due to some difficulties that resulted in the change. Meanwhile, for those who are using the Chrome 50 beta version, you’ll get better push notifications and other features meant for developers.

The Chrome 49 for Android devices is now going back to the previous way it handled tabs on smartphones. When our devices were updated to Lollipop, browser tabs were transferred to the recent apps or overview menu, but you had the option to turn off the “merge tabs and apps” in the settings menu. But with the latest update, that option is off by default, reverting to the previous way of the tabs that were opened by browser users then automatically closed in the app. It is a minor (and somewhat confusing) change but that should make those who were complaining that the tab switching has become slower, happy.

The beta version 50 meanwhile has also made some improvements, but this is more for the developers’ enjoyment. They are now switching to a push notifications payload model instead of the previous reliance on service workers to get the data from the servers. This will now make push notification from websites and other services more reliable and more customizable. The browser will also now be able to get information from sites ahead of time as to which resources should be downloaded, ensuring faster site loading.

Chrome 49 should be rolling out to users now, while Chrome 50 Beta can now be downloaded and updated. The changes in the latter should be making its way to the final build in around six weeks.
