If you’re an adventurous buyer, meaning you have extra cash lying around and you don’t mind buying something you’ve never seen before, then you are the target market for this latest marketing ploy from Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus. We all know that their upcoming new flagship is just around the corner, and if you want to buy the OnePlus 3 ahead of everyone else, you now can. The only catch is that you actually don’t know what it is and how much it will cost.

OnePlus is no stranger to gimmicks, given that you were only able to purchase their first phone by invite back then. But this takes the “adventure” on a whole different level. They will be selling a thousand units of the OnePlus 3, sight unseen, details unconfirmed, and price unknown. That is a huge ask of course, but they are probably banking on their track record with their past smartphones, as well as appealing to those who like to take expensive risks.

While there have been some rumors about the OnePlus 3, no details have been confirmed at all. Sources are saying it will have an all metallic design and a full HD screen. It may also be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, will have 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The cameras are rumored to be at 16MP for the main shooter and 8MP for the front facing one.

What will happen here is that you will pay a “blind price” of 2,999 yuan (around $455) and when the actual price is revealed, you will either be refunded the difference or add some more money, depending on how much it will be eventually. The blind buyers will also receive a 6-month screen warranty (worth $7) and a gift certificate worth $48. The OnePlus 3 will be officially launched on June 15 in China, and if you’re not happy with it, you can cancel the order and get a refund.

  1. I think maybe it will be a mystery as to which variant you get. The cost covering the high end and the refund for the lesser models.
