While you’re probably satisfied with your smartphone or tablet screen when you’re traveling or mobile, don’t you just wish sometimes that you can whip out a bigger screen so you can show off a presentation or watch a video with your friends? A Kickstarter project will give you just that and it’s cleverly named SPUD or Spontaneous Pop-Up Display. It has actually more than met its target and if things go well, you might see it in retail stores next year.
Having a portable 24-inch monitor seems like a heavy thing to lug around, but this one weighs only 2 pounds and actually opens up like an umbrella. The device is 21 inches wide 11 inches high and 14 inches deep if fully expanded. It has a short-throw DLP projector inside the umbrella that will bring you a 720p display and up to 785 nits of brightness. If you keep it up to just 350 nits, you can make the battery last for up to 6 hours, which is pretty great for a portable monitor.
You can connect it to an Android smartphone or tablet through Chromecast or other wireless dongles, as it has USB and HDMI ports. You can use it to watch movies and TV shows or to play games on. At work, you can also use it to have a dual-screen setup or to use during presentations and demos.
The project has already more than reached its target goal of $33,000 and as of this writing, they almost have $300,000 to fund the pop-up display. You still have time to support it through Kickstarter and pay only $374, as compared to the $499 once it starts retailing next year. Expected delivery to supporters is June of 2017.

1) So it’s a 24″ monitor that is curved so much that it’s 21″ ‘flat’.
If so, it might not be fit for serving more than two people at a time. A 10″ tablet definitely could – but not comfortably.
2) This umbrella might not be trusted with any bit of wind (or draft).
3) I find the resolution disappointing, and likely the brightness too. I think that I would rather carry some Full HD 2500 lumen projector (and its price tag). But streaming my content to viewers’ devices might be even better.
4) I do wish the creators luck with this interesting device, though! 🙂
Looks cool! I’ve been wondering about a portable monitor but probably want a “foldable” OLED screen myself. I’m also not a mobile warrior so this isn’t really for me.
