Majority of the companies around the globe still do not fully adopt biometrics. Only a small percentage take advantage of the technology but more researchers now are working on to enhance the system, hoping to improve on it or create a totally new related technology. Some Yahoo Labs researchers were able to develop ‘Bodyprint’, a new technology that can turn any smartphone touchscreen display into a biometric scanner for many purposes.
Since the latest smartphones now use fingerprint scanners for security, it only makes sense that we push forward the biometric technology since it makes for easier, quicker, and more convenient authentication. Right now, fingerprint scanners are expensive so you can only find them on premium phones together with other high-end specs and features. Such technology also requires higher quality sensor and pixel resolution.
And so the Bodyprint is introduced by Yahoo Labs. It’s a new biometric authentication system that detects a person’s biometric features with the use of capacitive sensing. What’s new in this technology is that it uses the whole touchscreen display as the image sensor. This can then be used to scan other larger body parts like palms, firsts, ears, or fingers. You can just press whatever part against the display screen.
Bodyprint technology is new but its classified body parts accuracy is 99.98% according to Yahoo Labs researchers. False rejection rate is 26.82% and while user identification is 99.52% accurate.
Like fingerprint detection, body parts and characteristic poses are identified when there’s contact with the touchscreen. Touch images are then analyzed based on the capacitive images from the touch chip. Usually, a device processes 2D touch locations but the Bodyprint allows more points to be analyzed.
In the future, biometrics could be a standard in user identification, security, and authentication. What the video below to learn more about Bodyprint
