This is not the first product that has entered (or is entering) the market that will be able to turn your normal smartphone camera into a microscopic device. But it may be the most portable and affordable and the thinnest one yet. Blips is now on Kickstarter, trying to raise funds in order to bring this to more people who would want to have an accessory to give their devices more power in order to “explore the micro world”.

Blips is a set of 2 mini lenses that you can attach to your smartphone’s camera so it can take microscopic level pictures. It has an optical magnification of 10 times for high definition macro pictures. You also get a working distance of 12mm between the lens and the focal plane so you can turn it into a high power magnification lens. And even if you don’t use it to take pictures, you can still use it as an actual microscope if you need it as it can detect details of about 1/7000 inch, which can see single cells and inhabitants of the micro world.

Now who would want to use this kind of accessory. Well, scientists and researchers who are out on the field might want to have a microscope handy when they look for plants or animals or whatever it is they’re looking for or studying. For photographers who want to take micro photos, this is of course a great accessory to have and since it is tiny you can just slip it in your pocket. It will also be a cool thing to have if you just want to have fun with the pictures you take.

Blips has actually reached its goal of €15,00 and so far they have received more than twice the amount (currently at €43,383) with 37 more days to go. You only have to pledge €20 to get the basic kit, with retail price at €29 when it comes out. Estimated shipping is by September 2016.
