Canada-based manufacturer BlackBerry has announced that they are “the first major manufacturer to patch QuadRooter vulnerabilities.” Granted, that’s a good job, taking care of the people who stuck with you and bought the BlackBerry Priv and the BlackBerry DTEK50. There are some of us out here that will take issue with that term “major manufacturer”, but let’s give credit where it is due, yes?

BlackBerry has already rolled out a patch to all four vulnerabilities on their DTEK50 devices, and patched three of the four QuadRooter issues on the Priv. BlackBerry claims that “the secure boot chain present in all BlackBerry devices naturally mitigates the (one) remaining issue”, so that’s that. All of the users of these Android devices should feel safe that they can’t be hacked via those avenues.

If you’re a Priv or DTEK50 user and you think you haven’t gotten these updates, here’s how to get them. You can just navigate to Settings > About phone > System updates on your BlackBerry Android device. Just make sure you’re on a good wifi connection if you’re doing these patches.

This is typical marketing razzle-dazzle by BlackBerry, and they say they are “very proud to support Google’s push for rapid security updates by becoming the first major OEM to patch all of the QuadRooter issues.” But in reality, there has been pretty little to be excited about for BlackBerry on the device side. The Priv was supposed to bring back excitement for the company’s products, but the pricey device and the lackluster sales performance seems to have buried any chance of them coming back to relevance.

  1. “…the first major manufacturer”. Since the topic is Android, BB can barely be called a ‘manufacturer’ anymore, and certainly not a major manufacturer.

Has John Chen infringed on Steve Jobs/Apple’s famous ‘reality distortion field’ patents?

  2. Hi Everyone:

I know Blackberry has taken a lot of flack and certainly messed up not having full android play compatibility in their BB10 system. However I bought a Priv and at first it was just okay, but with all the new software releases it is now an AWESOME phone. Great battery life, fast, good camera and all the Blackberry software and security built in.

Please take another look at Blackberry – even if you don’t want to buy their phones you can download their software for your android phone from the Google play store. The Blackberry Hub for me is the number 1 feature, having all my email, TXT, BBM and social media in one place is very nice.

I think it’s time the android community stopped bashing Blackberry and realised that Blackberry is now on-board with Android Big time.
