Okay, we don’t mean the actual characters when we say Black Widow and Superman are in the new TV ad for Huawei’s new flagship, the P9. But the actors who play them are up front and center in the 30-seconder ad. Scarlett Johanson and Henry Cavill don’t seem to be playing their famous movie characters or themselves for that matter, but it probably doesn’t matter as people would still watch the video in a heartbeat (995,978 views and counting).

The too-short-to-fully-showcase-the-beauty-of-the-phone-and-its-stars video shows the two actors trying to one up each other in a “who can take the coolest photo” contest. Cavill is somewhere in Shanghai while Johansson is in what seems to be a movie studio/lot and both are showing off the camera features of the Huawei P9, which includes the Leica-branded dual camera lens (which was actually created by a Chinese OEM but that’s another story).

Huawei is still trying to make a name for itself in the US, even though it is considered a top player in China. Attaching these two Hollywood names to their TV ad seems to be their way of trying to attract a more international audience. However, while the two are extremely telegenic of course, it doesn’t really say much about their product and truth be told, the ad is kind of boring.

While of course they couldn’t use the Superman and Black Widow characters, they still could have creatively played off on their personas. Instead, what we have here is just two attractive people taking pictures (which some would not really complain about). Let’s see if Huawei has something more up its sleeves.
