Axon 7 is ZTE’s newest flagship, great specs, affordable pricing

ZTE is following up last year’s Axon flagship with the new Axon 7, this year’s new flagship offering from the China-based manufacturer. Last year, everybody was a surprised that even a small(ish) player like ZTE would be able to produce a premium gadget with premium specs. This year, nobody will be surprised at ZTE anymore, but the Axon 7 will be most surprising because of its price point.

First up, let’s look at what we get with ZTE Axon 7. Up front is a premium 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) AMOLED screen, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 with either 4GB or 6GB RAM (the latter for the standard and premium version). Internal storage choices are at an already generous 64GB and a whopping 128GB for the premium variant. Everything will run under Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, with a promise to upgrade to Android N when it launches.

The price point will be the kicker for this flagship. The Basic Variant, with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, is available for around USD$442, lower than most flagship devices and below the vaunted $500 line. The Standard Variant will give you 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage and that is priced at USD$505. There is a planned Premium Variant with a walnut composite material case option that will be priced at USD$625.
