True to its earlier teaser, ASUS has just introduced its 4-, 5-, and 6-inch smartphone lineup at CES 2014. But don’t write these off as your run of the mill Android smartphone, as ASUS is introducing some unique features into the series.
It seems that Intel‘s dreams of making a mark in the smartphone will be coming by way of ASUS. All three of these colorful devices run an Intel Atom processor under the hood. Whether or not this delivers performance, energy efficiency and heat dissipation on par with leading mobile processors still remains to be seen. ASUS is also following the way of other major Android smartphone manufacturers and introducing its own custom UI called ZenUI that it adds on top of Android 4.3. Aside from having a different look and feel, ZenUI also adds some features and apps, like Omlet Chat free messaging and an enhanced email app, which some users might consider as unnecessary bloatware.
Looking at the hardware, we have the ZenFone 4, the smallest of the bunch and definitely the simplest. It runs on a 1.2 GHz Z2520 Intel Atom chip and 1 GB of RAM. The 4-inch screen is only capable of a 800×480 resolution, but the smartphone isn’t built for extreme performance for multimedia or gaming anyway. The ASUS ZenFone 4 will be available in five color options of Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, Sky Blue, and Solar Yellow.
Moving up the ladder, we find the ZenFone 5 with definitely higher specs, including a faster 2 GHz Intel Atem Z2580 processor. The larger 5-inch IPS display is able to accommodate 1280×720 pixels. This smartphone boasts of a few of ASUS’ technologies, such as PenTouch and GloveTouch which allows any stylus or gloved hand to still use the display. The 8 megapixel rear camera also employs ASUS PixelMaster technology for taking better shots even in low-light scenarios. The ASUS ZenFone 5 only has four color options, which includes a shiny Champagne Gold.
Last but definitely not least is the huge ZenFone 6. Internally, it resembles the ZenFone 5, sporting the same 2 GHz Intel Atom Z2580 CPU and 1 GB of RAM. The difference, of course, is in the packaging, with the ZenFone 6 strutting a large 6-inch display but unfortunately the same 1280×720 resolution. Fortunately, it does have a bigger rear camera at 13 megapixels. It possesses the same list of ASUS features such as PenTouch, GloveTouch, and PixelMaster. Like the ZenFone 5, the ASUS ZenFone 6 comes in four colors of Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, and Champagne Gold.
ASUS has not yet disclosed market availability of the ASUS ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5, and ZenFone 6 nor have we heard of any pricing scheme yet for this Intel-powered lineup.
