The upcoming IFA 2016 will of course be the launching ground for a lot of new smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc. But it’s also fertile ground for OEMs other than the more famous ones like Samsung, LG, etc to show off their newest devices. French brand Archos is one of those and they will actually be announcing several new Helium Android phones. But another one that they will be unveiling is the Archos 50 Saphir, a water-resistant phone with a 5000mAh battery and a rugged persona so you can bring it to the wild outdoors.

The specs of the upcoming smartphone from Archos doesn’t really impress as compared to most new devices. It has a 5-inch 720p IPS display and it is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MTK6737 processor at 1.5GHz. It has 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded through a microSD card, and LTE and Dual SIM support. It has a 13MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing shooter, which is probably typical for devices in this class.

What the 50 Saphir is harping about though is its “ruggedness” in the sense that it is IP68-certified, so it can actually survive being immersed in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, just in case you need it to take pictures underwater or something. It can also withstand drops from up to 1 meter as well, which isn’t really that impressive as compared to other rugged devices.

But at a price of $222, the Archos 50 Saphir may be more affordable compared to other rugged smartphones. It will be available in Europe this coming October, but expect to see a bit more of it during the IFA 2016 happening this first week of September.
