The “double tap to wake” feature – which I first experienced on an LG phone – was truly a game changer for me, and probably for a whole multitude of Android users out there. That’s why we were kinda happy to see it on the initial review units of the Nexus 6. Strangely, the feature was nixed when the Nexus 9 was launched for the market. Here’s a probable fix.
The app is called “Nexus 6 Double Tap to Wake”, so that there would be no confusion there. It was developed by XDA member “naxir” and gives you the ability to bring back the feature. The big caveat here is that your Nexus 6 must be rooted.
If you have no problems doing that then you can absolutely go for it. The app just gives you one single setting to tap – whether to enable the double tap setting or disable it. From initial reviews, there are some inconsistencies with the app, which stops working when your phone has been idle for a long-ish period of time. But you’re free to try it, of course.
If you are an XDA member, then we’re happy to tell you that the developer has made the APK available for free via the app’s official forum thread. If not, then you can download it with a fee of USD$1.00 via the Google Play Store.
