And just like that, Q1 of 2016 is over and done with. Already, we’ve had a number of flagships launched and a lot of smartphones and tablets to deal with, and it’s just the first part of the year! AnTuTu – the benchmarking outfit – has had their hands full even in Q1, but they’ve come out with their official top ten devices in terms of performance. There may be doubts as to the accuracy of these benchmark apps, but they have been at this for a while now, and the performance numbers have more or less matched.
So let’s get the numerical data out there – top of the pile is the Xiaomi Mi 5 with 136875 benchmark points, but the Galaxy S7 edge isn’t that far behind with 134599. The iPhone 6s Plus, which was performance king last quarter, drops to third. It bears mentioning that it was only quite recently that an iPhone was included in the ranking since AnTuTu’s benchmarking tool was made available for iOS also just recently.
We may have to clarify the gaps between the top 2 devices, which is really not that big. The Xiaomi Mi 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge both carry the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset with 4GB RAM. The next variable here will be the display size, where the processor and GPU will have to push more pixels if the display is more pixel-dense. The Mi 5 only has a 1080p display, while the Galaxy S7 edge has a 2k display.
Rounding up the top devices are the Kirin 955-powered Huawei Mate 8, gaining ground on the top tier at 4th spot. Below it are last year’s performers – the Meizu Pro 5, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, the LeTV Max, the iPhone 6, and the Samsung Galaxy S6. If you’re looking for the LG G5, it was actually released this April, so we need to wait for the Q2 numbers to see how they fare.
