So it will take a bit more time for Android 7.1 Nougat, the version of Android released with the new Google Pixel smartphones, to get to last year’s flagships – but it’s getting there. A Developer Preview is now available for the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X (and Pixel C), and it will feature a beta flavor of Android 7.1 for your device.
The purpose of releasing this Android 7.1 Developer Preview is that Google wants to see how the software and the devices perform together, and to stamp out any bugs and issues there might be with the software and hardware partnering. If you have a Nexus 6P, 5X or a Pixel C device, this might be a good thing for you, if you’re ok with beta version performance.
Of course, the Android 7.1 DP will have the new features which we discussed here before. It will not include the features specifically for the Pixel smartphones alone, but there are still quite a few new things on this version you could get used to.
If your device is already enrolled in the Android Beta program, then all you need to do is wait for the update notification to come to you. You can also download the system images and flash them manually, although that will entail all the data on your internal storage being wiped and deleted.
