There certainly can be more ways on how to finish your shopping. Mobile payment services are slowly gaining traction but that’s on the financial side of your shopping. As for the security and authentication part, your being vain selfie can be the future method. This is based on a recent patent filed by Amazon at the USPTO which shows a new processing checkout that tells you to position your face on the screen instead of just typing a passcode or PIN.
It’s easy to say that’s facial recognition but this is a bit different. The idea of Amazon is that it will use the camera of a laptop, smartphone, or tablet (or maybe even TV someday) and will require you to center your face. Facial recognition technology will still be used but you have to do what Amazon asks you to do. You may be asked to blink, smile, or whatever to finish the transaction. The difference is in the last step because anyone could easily use a still photo to fake authentication but the action or gesture required will prove that there is a real person– the real account owner.
Selfie shopping could be the future of e-commerce. Fingerprint and passcode as authentications are widely accepted but they can still be compromised. Actually, anything can be compromised. We’re thinking this selfie code can still be fooled by using animation or GIF on a screen. We’re not really sure how Amazon plans to execute the concept.
Typing a password or PIN can be a hassle to some. Simple gestures for authentication are preferred but they’re still not totally secure. Facial recognition is okay but what if something happened to the umm, face of the user? Okay, that’s too much forward-thinking but yes, anything can happen. Let’s see if and when this patent will become a reality.
