Recently revealed by Samsung, the Galaxy Precedent places as an intermediate mid-range device. But here’s the kicker, it has an off-contract price we haven’t really seen in a smartphone of this caliber – ever. For $150, the buyer faces no contract, no hidden fees, and can pay for a monthly Straight Talk plan.

For the $45 (30-day) Straight Talk Unlimited plan, subscribers will be confined to limitations from Straight Talk’s Terms and Conditions:

The Straight Talk Unlimited Plans MAY NOT be used for any other purpose.  Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous mobile to mobile or mobile to landline voice calls; (ii) automated text or picture messaging to another mobile device or e-mail address; (iii) uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (iv) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (v) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections.  This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses may have his/her service terminated without notice or a refund.

As you can see, don’t expect to use your “unlimited” web browsing experience on Pandora or you may get caught by big brother; yet illegal tethering of your device on the Straight Talk network has been left out of the Terms and Conditions… who would have thought? Hardware specs of the Samsung Galaxy Precedent include an 800Mhz processor, 384MB of RAM, and a 2MP rear facing camera. Its 3.2″ display is quite small, but from the video demonstration the 320×480 resolution seems to suffice, especially for the $150 price tag. The Galaxy Precedent is not yet available, but expect to see it over at Walmart in due time.

  1. This is a Sprint network only phone.  I found out the hard way, and it’s being returned. Look at the bottom righthand corner of the box- “cdma-s”  the “s” is for Sprint.
    So BUYER BEWARE.

    • S-CDMA

      Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access

A proprietary version of code division multiple access (CDMA), S-CDMA
was developed by Terayon Corporation for data transmission across
coaxial cable networks. S-CDMA scatters digital data up and down a wide
frequency band and allows multiple subscribers connected to the network
to transmit and receive concurrently. This method of data transmission
was developed to be secure and extremely resistant to noise.

  3. Just a few questions from a non technical person:

    * Is this a decent phone overall?

    * Can you name a couple pros/cons of going android?

    * What happens to the phone and the $150 paid for it, if you decide you do not like the StraightTalk/Sprint service? Can you use this phone with another company/carrier.

    Thank you for your help!

  4. I have this phone i was on tmobile and get WAY better service with straight talk i think this phone is like my touch and galaxy s ive had both and for the price and better service its workin for me!!

  5. Well I was thinking of leaving my current provider (virgin mobil) because I’m paying $60 mthly not to mention I wanted another Android (currently have Lg Optimus) but after seeing Straight Talk does not allow you to listen to Pandora because it feels that you are abusing your Unlimited services I will not be switching. I listen to Pandora everyday whether cooking, cleaning, exercising, whatever O love it as well as my Sirus so I huess I’ll stick with my provider.

    • u can use pandora i have had this phone for about a month i use pandora every day and the service coverage is much better than t-mobile carrier i was useing  i have alot of apps on this phone and it works great

  6. This phone is nice but the sprint coverage is terrible. I can only use my phone when in city but no where in the suburbs. I tried talking to straight talk but they would not help. I was told i would have to pick a different phone that doesnt run off sprint. I really wanted the android phone and waited a long time. Now we have to switch to a new phone company if we want a better updated phone. VERY upsetting and straight talk doesnt even care.

  7. I have had this phone for 2 months. I love the phone but the Sprint service area is unbelievable. I can use it at my home but go 5 miles south and have no service. I am very dissappointed in this. When I travel I have no service in many places.

  8. I have straight talks samsung galaxy precedent, I rooted it, now I can listen to pandora, watch movies, use as hotspot, etc. works awesome, just google straighttalk oneclick root.

  9. It seems that “(v) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections” covers tethering, IMHO.
