Google have announced an “Android press gathering” on January 5th, and we’re expecting it to be the launch event for the much-rumored Google Nexus One. The event, to be held in Mountain View, will feature both a launch presentation and hands-on opportunities with the device.
Although the Nexus One is not mentioned by name in the invitation, it seems likely to be the star attraction. “With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago,” Google’s invite reads, “we’ve seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what’s possible.”
The Google Nexus One – aka the Google Phone – is built by HTC and powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, with a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen and the usual range of wireless connectivity. Carrier support in the US is expected to be provided by T-Mobile, who will act as “dumb pipe” while Google themselves distribute and support the hardware itself.
