In an effort to make things right with nature, Samsung is strengthening its sustainability policy by replacing the products packaging materials. The South Korean tech giant aims to use more sustainable materials to help reduce garbage. Those plastic materials will be replaced by paper or other available and environment-friendly products. Samsung will be specifically offering bio-based or recycled materials. They are not just papers but some may still be plastic but still recyclable. This is an official company policy that says Samsung will use paper packaging materials only certified by forestry initiatives such as the Forest Stewardship Council, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme.
The company has a team that’s been tasked to work on design, development, purchasing, marketing, and even quality control. One noticeable change is the use of pulp molds for the device holder trays.
Bags used for wrapping are now eco-friendly too. The phone charger will soon have a matte finish instead of the glossy exterior. Plastic films will be reduced as well.
When it comes to other Samsung products like appliances, the plastic bags will be replaced with bioplastics and recycled materials. The goal is to use 500 thousand tons of recycled plastics by 2030.
Samsung’s Head of Global Customer Satisfaction Center, Gyeong-bin Jeon, had this to say about the effort: “Samsung Electronics is stepping up in addressing society’s environmental issues such as resource depletion and plastic wastes. We are committed to recycling resources and minimizing pollution coming from our products. We will adopt more environmentally sustainable materials even if it means an increase in cost.”
