The Vivo APEX 2019 phone was teased yesterday without any port or buttons. It was quickly overshadowed by the Meizu ZERO also with no buttons. We didn’t see this trend coming because we’re all busy with multiple cameras, on-screen fingerprint sensor, and the notch. Officially launched by VIVO is this APEX 2019 concept phone as the first 5G smartphone boasting a Curved-Surface Waterdrop Glass. You can it’s almost, if not fully bezel-less because the seams are curved. The Chinese OEM launched this phone earlier in Beijing and we’re expecting more brands will also follow.

The APEX 2019 demonstrates that possibility of a future of phone that are very simple yet with enhanced usability. The idea of a Super Unibody design brings the smartphone aesthetics to a different level. Vivo knows design and innovation, after all, it is the first company to roll out a commercial phone with a working in-display fingerprint scanner.

This time, Vivo is trying a Full Display tech, still with fingerprint scanning. According to Vivo, the sensor covers almost the whole display. This means you can unlock the phone from any part of the screen. Now that’s a step ahead of the others once again.

Vivo is adopting Touch Sense technology. There will be no physical buttons available because the touch sense is enough. Ports are gone as well because some of them have been replaced. Instead of a USB port, there is the MagPort which is a new magnetic power connector. This one allows data transfer and charging.

As for the speaker, you won’t see any hole or speaker grill because of the Body SoundCasting technology. This makes the display work as a speaker as made possible by the screen vibration function.

The VIVO APEX 2019 also offers 5G support. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 12GB RAM, and a 256GB onboard storage. There’s the Jovi AI Assistant that makes the smartphone “smarter” and more functional.

Vivo’s 5G technology doesn’t just allow fast mobile Internet. Vivo says it combines AI, augmented reality, virtual reality, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Vivo will work on standardization with all these tech in mind so we can expect a more seamless experience between and among more mobile devices.

VIVO is expected to showcase the APEX 2019 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) in Barcelona.
