Popular podcast app Pocket Casts was recently acquired by not just one but four companies. The app developed by Shifty Jelly, an Australian developer, is about to experience a number of shifts in the business. The group of public radio companies is aiming to run the pocket radio app as a joint project. It’s more of a business venture now that the owners are all in the radio industry. Nothing much will change in management as the team handling Pocket Casts will continue to run the business.

The podcast producers namely NPR, WBEZ Chicago, This American Life, and WNYC Studios, all teamed up to look into Pocket Casts. One objective is to look into distribution and then offer more variety for the public.

New York Public Radio’s President and CEO Laura Walker shared this statement:

“Public radio has been at the vanguard of audio innovation and podcasting, bringing in new listeners, experimenting with new forms and topics, fostering engagement and community, and cultivating new talent in the industry. And yet despite this remarkable renaissance, the listening experience — particularly around discovery — has remained virtually unchanged.”

Walker also said that Pocket Casts will hopefully bring more people closer. A closer relationship with the listeners is part of the bigger plan. This venture will also aim to provide the audience with new ways to experience audio programming and begin a more customized discovery experience. All these and more come with the intention to facilitate the search for a related and relevant content.
