We’ve been anticipating for the Redmi Note 5 but instead, Xiaomi has unveiled the Redmi 5 Plus and Redmi 5 a few weeks ago. The Redmi Note 5 is no more so if you’ve been waiting for a new Note, sorry, there’s only the new Redmi 5 Plus. Xiaomi’s naming strategy can be confusing at times but looks like the Chinese OEM is trying to make things simpler now.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus actually came with the standard Redmi 5. The display sizes of the two are obviously different–5.7-inch for the Redmi 5 and 5.99-inch for the Redmi 5 Plus version. You can say the Redmi 5 is a follow-up to the Redmi 4X. As for the Redmi Note series, it’s being replaced with the Plus variant. These are budget smartphones with specs that are good enough to compete with other more expensive flagships from other OEMs.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus comes equipped with a Full HD+ display, 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution, 403ppi, 2.0GHz Snapdragon 625 processor, Qualcomm MSM8953 Cortex A-53 processor, Adreno 506 GPU, 3GB or 4GB RAM, 32GB or 64GB built-in storage, microSD card slot for memory expansion (128GB max), dual SIM support, 4G LTE connectivity, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, fingerprint scanner, and a large 4000mAh battery.
When it comes to imaging, the Redmi 5 Plus boasts a 12MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus, f/2.2 Aperture, face recognition, and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. There’s also a 5MP selfie camera with 1080 recording, Smart Beauty 3.0, and soft flash. Color options include Gold, Black, Rose Gold, and Light Blue.
As for the pricing, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus 3GB RAM with 32GB storage will cost ¥999. The 4GB RAM with 64GB model will be ¥1299–about $152 and $198 in the US.
