SMS isn’t going anywhere. It may be an old technology but a lot of people still rely on it. However, it’s not as widely used ever since the mobile Internet and instant messaging apps came into the picture. Actually, it hasn’t really changed despite carriers offering the service cheaper than ever. Texting is a standard messaging experience but technology hasn’t been enhanced for some time.
Google wants to step in by upgrading SMS through an initiative by the mobile industry called RCS. It stands for Rich Communications Services that aim to improve the technology by providing access to special services like group chat, read receipts, and high-resolution photo sharing. These new features are added for a richer messaging experience.
RCS is relatively new but this time, Google has begun working with Rogers to introduce RCS messaging to Android mobile users in Canada. This means consumers will now be able to use those features we mentioned a while ago.
Another interesting thing about this change is that it works with the Messenger app for Android. Get the latest Google Messenger to see the enhancements and experience the new messaging features. The tech is powered by the Jibe RCS cloud so you know your messages are sent privately and securely.
Rogers customers will be among the first to use such messaging technology and hopefully, it will extend further to other networks and carriers.
