
Sony is one of the few top brands that continue to innovate products, services, and technologies. We’ve been saying that 2016 is its make-or-break year but we still have no idea how the company is doing in terms of sales and revenues. It usually tries new programs and innovates by working on new platforms. The latest of which is this game platform called as the Project Field. Right now, it’s exclusive for Sony’s home country of Japan.
Sony’s Project Field is very much similar to Nintendo Amiibo and Disney Infinity. As we all know, Disney is already putting an end to the Disney Infinity game. So it’s not infinite after all and looks like Sony wants to fill in its shoes with this gaming platform. Its still in its early stages but it has potential as it works with a special pad connected to a tablet or smartphone.
The Project Field includes those quasi-digital games that require physical accessories. You need to connect the pad to a mobile device to enable game cards for example. The pad then reads whatever information or data are on the card that contain several important details about a character.
With this system, you play a digital game and a card game together. This brings the digital and physical gaming worlds together for your pleasure and entertainment. We just don’t know how many people actually enjoy such physical-digital adventures but we know there’s a market for this. Honestly, it’s another good way for parents to teach their kids the importance of physical gaming–that there are other things to enjoy beyond those mobile and virtual games they play on their smartphones, tablets, and computers.
Sony has big plans for this platform and has already introduced some games in the country. More will be released in the coming year and expect more to be announced as the Project Field SDK will also be offered to developers. No word when exactly though but we’re expecting sometime in the first half of 2017. No info either if and when it will be available in other countries but we’re crossing our fingers.
