It must have crossed your mind, this question of when we will be able to flash a custom ROM on a Google Pixel. Of course, stock Android 7.1 Nougat is wonderful and all that, but the innate curiosity of Android users will probably get the better of them in the end. We’ve just taken a step closer to custom ROMs on a Pixel with TWRP releasing their custom recovery for Google’s new flagship phones.

Team Win Recovery Project, or just TWRP for those who use it, has been the go-to custom recovery for Android users and tweakers since they took over the mantle from ClockworkMod because of their easy-to-use, easy-to-learn touch-based interface. A custom recovery is essential for flashing 3rd party software into an unlocked Android device, and we now just got TWRP for the Pixel phones.

Installing TWRP on to a Google Pixel phone will be a bit different since the file system is primed for Nougat’s “seamless updates”. To make sure you are following the correct instructions, check out the source link at the bottom of this article. Follow it to the letter, if you don’t want to brick your expensive Google Pixel phone.

TWRP developer “Dees_Troy” also outlined things that could go wrong, again available at the source link below. Since this is an “alpha” build, there are bound to be things that will go wrong, so we recommend you take extreme care of your valuable data and follow installation instructions to the hilt.
