If you’re very careful about your data consumption, especially if you’re on a limited plan, you would want a feature that would help you monitor your usage as you, well, use it. If you’re on Project Fi , Google’s very own mobile virtual network, then you will finally have something like this through your app and on your widget. The update however is only for devices running on Android 7.0 Nougat, but that’s okay because the network only currently runs on devices that are updated by Google, so you’re most probably on N already.

Once you’ve updated your app, you will be able to see live updates of your estimated usage within your billing cycle. So even as you’re using your network to browse the web or access your apps, you will see how many gigs you’ve already consumed for this cycle. You will even see a breakdown of which apps you used your data on, if you click on the View Details button. It will also show how much data you’ve consumed on your tethered devices.

This live monitoring will show up on the main screen of your app, as well as the data usage Home screen widget in case you don’t want to open the app anymore. Furthermore, if you’ve already exceeded your usage threshold, you’ll receive an alert that you’ve already gone beyond your data cap in order to avoid excess charges.

The Project Fi app version should be on K.2.7.20 or above so you can see this new feature. This network only works on selected devices, specifically the Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and of course, the newly-released Google Pixel.
