We knew it was only a matter of time before comics and graphic novels when into virtual reality because somehow, it seems like this medium will thrive in the format. Digital comics startup Madefire is now the first comics platform in VR with the preview launch of its Madefire Books and Miss app at the recently concluded New York Comic Con and if the full version is anything as awesome as the demo, then comic book lovers are in for a treat.
Once you put on your Galaxy VR and launch the comic app, you’ll be able to experience comic books and graphic novels in a whole new way. You’ll not just be able to view and read the material, but you get to experience it in 360 panoramic views with motion, sound effects, and music. You will be able to still control the pace, just like you’re reading an actual comic book. Madefire CEO Ben Wolsetnholme said that they wanted to create a “native digital experience” while still maintaining the idea of actually reading a comic book.
The demo app contains some popular titles like DC’s Injustice: Year One and some stories from favorite characters like Transformers, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, etc. There is also a Madefire Original called Mono: The Old Curiosity Shop. If you’re a comic book creator, the authoring tool of the app should also make it easy for you to customize and control the 3D part of their creation.
You can already get the Madefire app from the Oculus Store and use your Samsung Galaxy VR to view and experience it. But only previews of specific titles are available now. They’re hoping to have everything ready by December. You would need around 3.16GB of space to be able to install it.
