Google really has a soft spot for India, don’t they? Well aside from being the second most populous country in the world, Hindi is of course the fourth most-spoken language in the globe. And of course, a lot of the people there are digital-savvy and apparently always on the lookout for something new. So Google’s announcement that they will soon be adding Hindi language support to Google Assistant, their newly-launched voice-controlled AI tool, comes as no surprise.

Google Assistant was actually introduced to the general public just last week as it was integrated into Google’s new messaging app, Allo. And since the video-calling app Duo has seen an “amazing uptake” in India since it was released, then they expect that Allo will do the same. One of the selling points of the messaging app is that it has a built-in voice assistant and so having Hindi support will surely boost interest in Allo.

Google Assistant leans heavily on artificial intelligence and machine learning so adding another language to support it is pretty significant for the tech giant and a great thing for users that speak Hindi. The demo that they showed off in an event in Delhi was a seamless switching between English and Hindi while using Google Assistant in Allo. So if they’re actually able to officially do it on the app, then it would probably be a big hit in India, just like Duo.

The preview of the app with the Hindi option will be launched by the end of the year. This is just one of the many India-fcoused initiatives that Google has launched over the past few days, including YouTube Go, Google Station with its public Wi-Fi, and a data-saving version of Chrome as well.
