If you want to ruin your day or amuse yourself or if you have a lot of time on your hands, you should go through the comments section on YouTube. It’s a mix of the hilarious, the profane, and at times, you see the worst of humanity there. YouTube has often been criticized for not being able to control or police it properly, but now they’re taking steps to ensure that it becomes a safe space for both channel owners and viewers. And they need your help to make that possible as they launch their YouTube Heroes program.
Basically, if you apply to become part of the program, you will get points for different tasks that you will be doing within YouTube. If you report a video that doesn’t follow the community guidelines, you get a point. If you are able to provide the best answer in the help forums, you get 10 points. And so on and so forth. Depending on the points that you get, you will unlock different levels in the program, just like you’re playing a game.
And what should you do with those points? You will be able to receive rewards like reviewing products or features that aren’t yet released to the general public. When you get to level five, you will be able to apply for a new thing they’re calling the Heroes Summit. There are probably a lot of people that will be applying for this program if only because they have a lot of time on their hands, they are early adopters, or they’re just genuinely helpful people.
Google automatically gives the responsibility of policing comments to the channel owner since there are over a billion users in the world and they won’t be able to check everything. So do you think it’s a good idea that they’re giving the users some of that power? If you say yes and you want to help YouTube become a better place, you can apply to become a hero here.
