You probably only use Twitter’s Direct Messages section when you want to tweet someone without the whole world being privy to your conversation. But it may not be as conducive as a chat app as compared to Messenger or Viber or whatever messaging app you use. Twitter however wants you to treat it as such, and so they have been bringing new features and updates for this particular section. The latest one involves features that are not unfamiliar, since it’s found in nearly every other messaging app.
But for Twitter users, it is indeed something new. First, when you send a web link through DM, you’ll know be able to see a preview of that link so you can know whether or not you’d actually want to click on it and bring you to the built-in browser or to a browser of your choice if that’s your default action. Previously, you could only see the link URL, and as we all know, sometimes, it is not very helpful or descriptive, if you want to know what it’s about.
You also now have a typing indicator, so you know when the person you’re chatting with or the people, if it’s a group DM, is responding to your previous message. This is pretty helpful so as you will not talk over each other, which can get pretty confusing. You will also actually be able to see if the person has actually received and read your message, so Twitter users, you will now experience the joys of being seen-zoned.
We’re not exactly sure if these changes will get people using it as a chat box, as an alternative or even their main messaging app. At the very least, it will probably get more people using Direct Messages, especially if they keep adding more chat-friendly features in the near future.
