It may be long before we get the Android 7.0 Nougat on most of our smartphones but we’re glad to have seen several Android N Developer Previews already. One of the many features we’ve tried and featured is the “Freeform mode” which is supposed to be a hidden item. This particular feature allows a mobile user to open apps and resize them to fit a screen.
The Freeform makes it possible for apps to run at the same time and view them on the screen at once. Unfortunately, such feature won’t be available on the Pixel C and Nexus devices. What we thought would be a standard Nougat feature will only be available as a special option. The Freefom APIs wll be ready for OEMs. Implementation will be up to them.
Don’t be frustrated because the Taskbar developed by Braden Farmer will serve as an alternative. This one allows you to open programs and other apps in Freeform mode.
Make sure you are set as a developer on your phone by simply enabling the Developer Options (Settings> About phone> Build number). Look for Force activities that can be resized.
Taskbar is actually an app that you can get from the Play Store. Feel free to enable Freeform so you’ll enjoy and learn a thing or two before using the function.
