If you’ve noticed that your friends have suddenly been posting “artistic” filters of their selfies or their kids’ pictures, it’s not because they’ve suddenly discovered the wonders of Photoshop. It’s really the fault of photo editing app Prisma, which has taken the app world by storm. But it also has received a lot of complaints for being a bit too slow in applying the filters, probably because of the huge number of users. So the latest update to the app brings offline processing for several of the available filters.
The filtering process that Prisma uses isn’t just as simple as when you apply filters in Instagram or other photo editing apps. It analyzes your photo first and then applies more complicated and intense filters, ranging from Pop Art to the ones used on famous paintings, etc. It requires quite a bit of AI and deep learning and uses server-side processing, hence the slow conversion or sometimes, it even hangs entirely during the process.
But now they’ve come up with the addition of offline filter processing for 16 of the 35 currently available filter styles. It also offers a relatively faster processing time than the online one. The developers are targeting a less than 5 second goal. But of course, it will also depend on how old (or new) your device is. However, for now, the offline filters are only available for iOS devices, but Android will probably be not far behind.
The updated version of the app also lets you donate $1 to a charity by using one of the “Philantrophic” styles. It will even tell you about a person that the organization has helped. You can donate directly from the app, even if you don’t actually use the filter itself. Prisma is also looking to eventually add styles and filters to video clips, so that is something to look forward to.
