He still has only a few months left in the Oval Office, so if you’ve always wanted to say something to US President Barack Obama, now is the time to do so. And Facebook and the White House is making it easier for you to let him know what you think by adding a bot that will let you send a note to him before his term is over. This is just part of the planned bot invasion that Messenger wants to bring as thousands of developers and brands have already created their own.
The Messenger bot from the White House will not exactly let you chat directly with the President. When you type in something in the chat box and send it to them, you’ll receive an automated message that says that his staffers select 10 messages from “average” citizens that the President reads every night and so your message might be one of those. Now we don’t know if they will let you know if your message was chosen, but hopefully they will since it will probably be something you’d want to know.
To use the Messenger bot, you will have to go to the White House’s official Facebook page. You just have to click the message button and then the bot will guide you through the entire pretty painless process. Part of the process is including an address and phone number before you submit your message, so don’t get any ideas about sending threatening messages or something vitriolic. Of course it’s a free country and you have freedom of speech, but they’re hoping people will use this bot “responsibly”.
Bots are becoming extremely popular for a lot of messaging apps, and Messenger is one of those that truly embraces it. We might be seeing a new way of communicating not just with our friends and loved ones but also interacting with brands and companies and other apps as well.
