When the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was first launched, we immediately noted its MU-MIMO connectivity. Others may not really care about it but the Multi-user MIMO feature means faster network connection as made possible by the four antennas keeping the connection with cell towers. This feature is the latest topic on Reddit when one Note 7 owner showed his discovery of the phone supporting 4×4 MIMO. This means it is the first commercial device with such feature that allows a speedier and more efficient mobile Internet connection.
The Galaxy Note 7 is said to take advantage of Qualcomm’s integrated modem. Discovered while tinkering the new Galaxy Note 7, the reference to Rx4D clearly shows there is the 4-way antenna found in the phablet. That sounds like an ordinary detail but this development is important. We’re talking about speed here.
Although most people may never notice the difference, at least, we know that Samsung had done its part in improving mobile connectivity. We’re not sure if such is enabled on default but it seems the 4×4 MIMO capability is still being tested. We won’t be surprised if a firmware update will be released to finally make this MU-MIMO fully working.
In the coming days, when the Galaxy Note 7 starts shipping to consumers, more reliable and sturdy connections can be expected. Those four channels can even deliver faster downloads. Another good result is a more efficient battery even if the device seems to be “busy”. The quicker the downloads are over, the better because the phone can be optimized and finally settle in lower power mode. The end result then is a longer battery life.
Other benefits of this 4×4 MIMO include overall signal resiliency which is ideal for VoLTE, download rates are doubled, and spectral efficiency. Note that these advantages can be experienced on the Qualcomm Snapdragon version of the Galaxy Note 7. We’re not sure about the Exynos model but Samsung should be ready with some alternatives.
