We don’t know yet when our smartwatches will be receiving the anticipated Android Wear 2.0 update. But what we do know now is that one app is the first “casualty” of this update. So, for those who have been using the Together app to communicate with your friends through your smartwatch, that is stopping soon. They have announced that it will be shut down totally by September 30 and that’s because it will become redundant once the wearable platform update hits the street, or rather, our wrists.
If you didn’t know it yet, Together was an app that paired your smartwatch with another smartwatch so you could share sketches, photos, emojis, stickers, and activities. But the app announced that most of its best features will actually be integrated directly into Android Wear 2.0 and so there is no point in maintaining the app anymore. The announcement also revealed and confirmed some details about the update, including the ability to use Smart Reply, keyboard or handwriting on the watch screen as well as customizing different watch faces with useful data from the apps that you use a lot.
The fact that Together will completely shut down by September 30 has led some to speculate that Android Wear 2.0 will be released either before that or on that date exactly. However, the preview version is still on its second release. Google previously said that the update will have four milestones, a near final release, then the official release. For all of that to happen on or before September 30 seems pretty far-fetched.
This shouldn’t affect second generation Android Wear devices since when they’re updated to version 2.0, then they’ll be able to enjoy features similar to Together. But for the first generation device owners, not only do you lose the app, but you also won’t get the update.
