Just a day has passed since Huawei announced their Honor Note 8 with its huge 6.6-inch display being marketed as a multimedia viewing device. But for those who would want a slightly smaller and less expensive new smartphone from the Chinese brand, they have officially announced their new Honor 5 or Honor Play 5, a budget 4G device that for now will only be available in China, but may make its way to other markets hopefully.
The smartphone has a 5.5-inch HD display and is the newest member of their Honor family. It is running on Android 5.1 Lollipop (which can probably be upgraded to 6.0 Marshmallow) and is powered by a 1.3 quad-core MediaTek processor. It will have an EMUI 3.1 Lite on top and has support for dual SIMS as well. Camera-wise, it has an 8MP main camera with dual LED flash and for the front-facing camera, you have just a 2MP one, so you probably shouldn’t use it for selfies, unless you’re okay with a sort-of low-res one.
Even though the specs aren’t that great as compared to others in its category, it does have 4G connectivity and can support VoLTE or voice over LTE so if making calls is a big requirement for your new phone, then it should still do the job. The phone has an easy key on its side which you can use to launch apps if you long press on it, launch the flashlight if you double press, and launch the camera if you simply press on it.
Since the specs are for low-end/entry level devices, it’s not surprising that the price is pretty affordable. It is around $90 or 500 Chinese Yuan and will go on sale by August 2, but only in China for now. You can choose between black, white, and gold colors. Hopefully it will expand to other markets, specifically those that are in need of affordable devices like this.
