Yesterday, BlackBerry took the wraps off its second Android-powered phone and the first mid-range Android phone in the form of the DTEK50. There was no Hamburg or Rome reference as the Canadian smartphone pioneer gave it a boring name. It came a bit as a surprise but we already know what DTEK meant to the OEM. In case you didn’t know, it’s the technology that helps secure any BlackBerry phone.
In the BlackBerry PRIV flagship model, the DTEK app is installed as a special app that monitors the other apps and the whole OS. DTEK provides information to the BlackBerry mobile device owner when the phone privacy is already at risk. The app largely helps BlackBerry make every device, safe, private, and secure.
We totally understand the name DTEK50 but what happened now to the “Neon” or “Hamburg”? As it turned out, those are just codenames within the company. Honestly though, it would be nice if the device is given a name that’s easier to understand. Either of the two–BlackBerry Hamburg or BlackBerry Neon–would have been okay. Then again, BlackBerry chose the more serious model number.
There must be a reason and it seems the company decided on DTEK50 because according to the Global Head of Design for BlackBerry, Scott Wenger, the name symbolizes many things. He said: “It is a continuation of security story. We started that story with the Priv as it came with DTEK as an application. It’s really more than an application as it’s very deeply integrated, but people know it as an app.”
Well, that’s nice. At least we know that the executives at BlackBerry aren’t just thinking about making money. They’re also sentimental and nostalgic.
In case you haven’t noticed yet, the BlackBerry DTEK50 looks a lot like the Alcatel Idol 4. Apparently, this new BlackBerry phone is manufactured by TCL which is the same company that makes Alcatel phones. So can we say that BlackBerry DTEK50 is a repackaged Idol 4? Maybe.
Device comes equipped with the following specs: 5.2-inch 1080p display, 3GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, Snapdragon 617 chipset, 2610mAh battery, 13MP rear camera, 8MP front-facing camera, and Quick Charge 2.0 technology. So far, this BlackBerry DTEK50 is the thinnest from the OEM yet at only 7.4mm.
DTEK is now up for pre-order in Canada with August 8 as release date. It’s listed with a $429 CAD price tag. Several Canadian mobile carriers will offer the BlackBerry DTEK50 like Bell, Rogers, Wind Mobile, Videotron, SaskTel, and Telus.
