The flagship smartphone space is getting more crowded by the day, and no matter what the traditional big manufacturers tell you, flagship level specs and competitive (read: cheaper) pricing will always get you noticed. That is the argument for all the flagships coming out of China, and the Redmi Pro from Xiaomi is not an exception. The Redmi Pro combines competent specs and a price well below the norm for flagships, because it does carry the budget “Redmi” branding for Xiaomi. At the very least, it’s worth a good look.
After weeks and weeks of leaks, we finally have Xiaomi’s Redmi Pro with us, and it doesn’t disappoint. Up front is a 5.5-inch FullHD (1080p) OLED display, the first time you will see an OLED display on a Xiaomi device. Also, the top variant of the Redmi Pro boasts the new MediaTek Helio X25 deca-core processor, an improvement from the already powerful Helio X20. That will be ably supported by up to 4GB RAM, a Mali-T880 GPU, and a whopping 128GB of internal storage.
Also, the Redmi Pro is Xiaomi’s first phone with a dual-lens setup for the main camera. The company says the camera gives users the ability to choose the focus point after a shot is taken, much like what was possible on the HTC One dual-lens cameras. The Redmi Pro also looks good, a plus factor for every user – you get 2.5D curved glass up front, chamfered edges, a fingerprint sensor on the home button, and a brushed metal finish out the back.
If you realize that all this is available for around USD$300, then the Redmi Pro presents a very strong argument against flagships normally priced above USD$500. The lower variants are priced USD$224 and USD$254, but we suggest that if you’re purchasing this one, might as well go for the top variant. The Redmi Pro is available in gray, black, and gold, starting on August 6 in China.
